Biography

Biography of Blessed Marin Shkurti:

Blessed Marin Shkurti was born in the small village of Samrish, Daj√ß-Bregu i Bunôs, Shkodrô, Albania, in the year 1933. He grew up in a devout Catholic family and early on showed great religious fervor and intellectual promise. At a young age, Marin felt a calling to the priesthood, and his dedication to the Catholic faith never wavered.

His journey towards becoming a priest began when he was ordained for the Archdiocese of Shkodrô-Pult, Albania, in the majestic Cathedral of Shkodra, by Monsignor √áoba on 8 December 1961. Marin embraced his role as a shepherd of souls with wholehearted commitment, ensuring that the faithful under his care received spiritual guidance and sacraments.

However, the religious landscape in Albania dramatically changed as Communist authorities gained control and imposed strict atheistic policies. In this hostile environment, where the churches were closed, Blessed Marin Shkurti refused to abandon his flock. Instead, he courageously continued his ministry, secretly ministering to the covert Catholic population in various towns across the country.

Due to increased persecution, Marin eventually decided to flee to Yugoslavia for safety. Sadly, his escape was unsuccessful as the Yugoslavian authorities handed him back to the Albanian regime. Despite the grave dangers he faced, Marin remained steadfast in his faith and dedicated to his mission as a priest.

The final act of martyrdom for Blessed Marin Shkurti took place in his homeland. In April 1969, he was shot and killed in Shkodrô, Albania, precisely because of his unwavering commitment to his Christian beliefs. His martyrdom testifies to the depth of his faith and the sacrifice he made for the salvation of souls.

Recognizing the heroic virtues and sacrificial death of Blessed Marin Shkurti, Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrdom on 26 April 2016, conferring him with the status of Venerable. Later, on 5 November 2016, Pope Francis beatified him in a solemn ceremony celebrated at the Square of the Cathedral of Shôn Shtjefnit in Shkodôr, Albania. Cardinal Angelo Amato presided over the beatification ceremony, acknowledging the exceptional example of faith that Marin Shkurti left behind.

Blessed Marin Shkurti remains an inspiration and a guiding light for all those facing religious persecution. His life and martyrdom stand as a testimony to the indomitable spirit of those who ardently embrace their faith, regardless of the trials they may encounter. May his intercession strengthen and protect all those who strive for religious freedom and the spread of the Gospel in Albania and beyond.
