Biography

Blessed Mariethérèse Haze, also known as Giovanna Haze, Jeanne Haze, Johanna Haze, or Marie-Thérèse of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, was born on 27th February 1782 in Liège, Belgium as Jeanne. She was one of seven children born to the secretary of the last prince-bishop of Liège.

Mariethérèse displayed remarkable intelligence from an early age and was able to read and write by the age of four. Although she felt drawn to religious life, she did not immediately find her vocation. It was not until she reached the age of 50 that Mariethérèse Haze finally discovered her true calling.

In 1833, Mariethérèse founded the Congregation of the Daughters of the Cross of Liège. As the Superior General of the congregation, she dedicated her life to serving the weak and poor. Under her guidance, the Congregation expanded rapidly, establishing more than 50 houses and gathering over 900 sisters in service to those in need.

Throughout her life, Blessed Mariethérèse Haze exemplified deep faith and devotion to God. She demonstrated an unwavering commitment to helping the vulnerable and marginalized members of society, following in the footsteps of Jesus' love and compassion.

Blessed Mariethérèse Haze passed away on 7th January 1876 in Liège, Belgium due to natural causes. Recognizing her exemplary virtues and her profound impact on the lives of many, Pope Pius XII declared her venerable on 9th February 1941. Her beatification took place on 21st April 1991, carried out by Pope John Paul II.

Blessed Mariethérèse Haze, with her tireless dedication to serving others, remains an inspiration to all who strive to live lives of selflessness and faith. Her legacy continues through the work of the Daughters of the Cross of Liège, who carry on her mission to this day.
