Blessed Marieanastasie De Roquard, also known as Sister Saint Gervase, was an Ursuline nun who was martyred during the French Revolution. She was born on 5 October 1749 in Bollène, Vaucluse, France.
From an early age, Marieanastasie displayed a strong inclination towards a religious life, and after careful discernment, she entered the Ursuline Order. She was known for her deep faith, unwavering commitment to prayer, and her dedication to serving the poor and marginalized.
As the French Revolution erupted, religious persecution intensified. The Ursuline convent in Orange, where Marieanastasie resided, became a target of the revolutionaries. The revolutionaries confiscated the convent and expelled the nuns, leaving them homeless and vulnerable.
Despite facing grave danger, Marieanastasie and her fellow sisters continued to practice their faith in secret, offering comfort and support to the persecuted Catholics. However, their actions were discovered, and on 13 July 1794, Marieanastasie, along with several other nuns and clergy, was arrested and charged with "conspiring against the Republic."
On the same day, Marieanastasie was guillotined in Orange, Vaucluse, France, embracing her martyrdom with remarkable bravery and steadfastness. Her execution was a testament to her faith and unwavering commitment to Christ, even in the face of grave danger.
Blessed Marieanastasie De Roquard's martyrdom did not go unnoticed by the Catholic Church. She was officially recognized and venerated as a martyr on 19 March 1925 by Pope Pius XI. Later that year, on 10 May 1925, Pope Pius XI beatified her, granting her the title of "Blessed."
Though specific details about Marieanastasie's life and personality are scarce, her story resounds as a powerful testament of faith and courage, especially during times of religious persecution. Her life serves as an inspiration for all believers to remain steadfast in their faith, even in the face of adversity and hostility. The memory of Blessed Marieanastasie De Roquard continues to be honored and celebrated on her feast day, which is observed on 13 July, and she is also recognized as one of the Martyrs of Orange, celebrated on 9 July.
