Blessed Marie Lhuilier

Biography

Blessed Marie Lhuilier, who is also known as Sister Saint Monica, was born on November 18, 1744, in Arquenay, Mayenne, France. She faced significant challenges in her early life, as she lost her parents when she was just a small girl. With no education or place in the world, she worked briefly as a domestic servant.

Seeking a higher purpose and spiritual fulfillment, Marie Lhuilier decided to join the Augustinian Sisters of the Mercy of Jesus (French Federation). She applied for entry to the convent of San Giuliano, where she was eventually welcomed. Marie Lhuilier dedicated herself to a life of service and devotion within the congregation.

After joining the Augustinian Sisters, Marie Lhuilier was assigned to work at the hospital of Chateau Gontier. There, she diligently cared for the sick and provided comfort to those in need. Her compassion and dedication to her patients were noticed by her fellow sisters, who admired her for her selfless nature.

In 1778, Marie Lhuilier made her profession within the Augustinian Sisters, taking the name Sister Maria of Santa Monica. She embraced her new religious identity and continued her mission of serving the less fortunate. She became an embodiment of Saint Monica, known for her perseverance and maternal care.

However, during the French Revolution, the Catholic Church faced severe persecution, as religious institutions were targeted. Sister Maria, steadfast in her faith, refused to take the civil oath, which led to her martyrdom. On June 25, 1794, in Laval, Mayenne, France, she was beheaded for her refusal to renounce her religious vows and faith.

Blessed Marie Lhuilier's memory, along with other martyrs from the same region, is honored on the feast days of June 22 and January 21, as one of the Blessed Martyrs of Laval. Some calendars also recognize her on June 25. Her courageous sacrifice and unwavering commitment to her beliefs have made her an inspirational figure for many.

Recognizing her martyrdom and devotion to her faith, Pope Pius XII declared her venerable on May 3, 1955, with a decree of martyrdom. Just a month later, on June 19, 1955, she was beatified by Pope Pius XII in Rome, Italy.
