Biography

Blessed Mariano Pina Turón was a Mercedarian priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 13 April 1867 in Híjar, Teruel, Spain, and dedicated his life to the service of God and the Church.

Blessed Mariano Pina Turón began his religious journey by joining the Order of Our Lady of Mercy, also known as the Mercedarians. This religious order was founded with the purpose of ransoming Christians who were enslaved during the time of the Moors. The Mercedarians also focus on the redemption of captives and the promotion of Christian values.

Throughout his priesthood, Blessed Mariano Pina Turón exhibited deep devotion and commitment to his faith. He not only served as a source of spiritual guidance for his fellow Mercedarians but also extended his ministry to the broader community. He devoted time to the care of the sick and the marginalized, exemplifying the virtues of compassion and charity.

However, during the tumultuous time of the Spanish Civil War, when religious persecution was rampant, Blessed Mariano Pina Turón became a victim of his faith. On 8 August 1936, he was martyred in Muniesa, Teruel, Spain, for his refusal to renounce his religious beliefs. Despite facing threats and persecution, he remained steadfast in his dedication to Christ and his Church until the very end.

In recognition of his courageous and unwavering faith in the face of persecution, Pope Benedict XVI declared Mariano Pina Turón venerable on 19 December 2011. Later, on 13 October 2013, Pope Francis beatified him, acknowledging his martyrdom and sanctity.
