Biography

Blessed Maria Mercedes Prat, also known as Mercedes of the Sacred Heart, was born on 6 March 1880 in Barcelona, Spain. She was baptized on 7 March 1880 and received her First Holy Communion on 30 June 1890. From an early age, Mercedes demonstrated deep piety and devotion, attending Mass nearly every day.

As a child, Mercedes was not only a dedicated student but also a gifted artist, particularly excelling in painting and needlework. Her talent and dedication were evident in her academic and artistic pursuits.

In 1904, Mercedes decided to dedicate her life fully to God and entered the Society of Saint Teresa of Jesus in Tortosa, Spain. She embraced the religious life with great enthusiasm and commitment. After completing her formation, she was assigned to the motherhouse of her congregation in Barcelona, Spain, in 1920.

Tragically, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Maria Mercedes Prat and her community faced persecution from anti-Catholic government authorities. On 19 July 1936, their house and school were forcibly abandoned. During this time, Mercedes was arrested solely for the reason of being a nun, a crime under the hostile regime.

On 23 July 1936, Maria Mercedes Prat suffered gunshot wounds, leading to her eventual death on 24 July 1936 in Barcelona, Spain. She courageously endured martyrdom, remaining faithful to her religious vows and her commitment to Christ, even in the face of persecution and violence.

Blessed Maria Mercedes Prat's life and witness were marked by her unwavering faith, humility, and dedication to her vocation as a religious sister. Her martyrdom underscores her commitment to Christ and the Gospel, as she ultimately sacrificed her life for the sake of her faith.

Recognizing her heroic virtues and martyrdom, Pope John Paul II venerated Maria Mercedes Prat on 21 December 1989, issuing a decree of martyrdom. She was subsequently beatified on 29 April 1990 by Pope John Paul II, who held her up as an example of fidelity and commitment to the Catholic Church even in the face of intense persecution. Today, the Catholic Church honors Blessed Maria Mercedes Prat on her feast day, 24 July, commemorating her martyrdom and celebrating her remarkable life of faith and devotion.
