Growing up with a strong faith and a desire to serve others, Maria Laura entered the Sisters of the Cross as a nun. On 22 August 1957, she entered the novitiate in Rome, Italy, and took the name Sister Maria Laura.
Throughout her religious life, Sister Maria Laura dedicated herself to the ministry of serving children and young people. She worked as both a classroom teacher and a spiritual leader in various Italian cities, including Vasto, Rome, Parma, and Chiavenna. It was in Chiavenna where Sister Maria Laura served as the superior of her community.
Tragically, on 6 June 2000, Sister Maria Laura fell victim to a brutal act of violence. Three teenage girls, driven by a misguided belief in Satanism, stabbed and beat her to death. Despite facing such a horrific fate, Sister Maria Laura's faith remained unwavering, and she died while fervently praying for her attackers.
The martyrdom of Sister Maria Laura Mainetti attracted significant attention and reverence. Recognizing her exceptional fortitude and dedication to her faith, Pope Francis venerated her on 19 June 2020 through a decree of martyrdom. This act acknowledged her heroic sacrifice in the face of evil.
To honor her memory and inspire future generations, Pope Francis beatified Sister Maria Laura Mainetti on 6 June 2021. The beatification recognition ceremony took place at the Campo Sportivo Comunale in Chiavenna, Sondrio, Italy, where her life was celebrated as a shining example of martyrdom and devotion to God.
