Biography

Blessed Maria Del Carmen Of The Child Jesus, also known as María del Carmen González-Ramos García-Prieto, María del Carmen González-Ramos García-Prieto de Muñoz, and Maria del Carmen of the Child Jesus Gonzalez Ramos, was born on 30 June 1834 in Antequera, Málaga, Spain. She was born into a pious family and grew up in a deeply religious environment.

In 1857, Maria married Joaquín Muñoz del Caño, but their marriage was far from harmonious. Joaquín proved to be a violent and unfaithful man. Despite the challenges she faced, Maria responded to her husband's behavior with unwavering faith and constant prayer. Her prayers eventually had a transformative effect on Joaquín, causing him to change his ways. This experience of marital struggle and redemption deepened Maria's commitment to her Catholic faith.

Sadly, Maria was widowed in 1881 when her husband passed away. However, rather than giving in to despair, she turned her grief into a source of compassion and dedication. In 1882, Maria, along with the help of Capuchin Father Barnabas Astoraga and some like-minded women friends, transformed her home into a combination school and clinic. Their aim was to care for and educate children who were too poor to have access to other resources.

On 8 May 1884, Maria and the other women began living in common at the convent of Our Lady of Victory in Antequera, Spain. They formed the core of the Hermanas Franciscanas de los Sagrados Corazones (Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart), an order that Maria played a vital role in founding. The Sisters received the approval of Bishop Miguel Salazar Gomez on 10 July 1884, and Maria took the name Carmen of the Child Jesus.

The work of the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart continued to grow and flourish under Maria's guidance. Their dedication to serving the poor and marginalized was recognized and appreciated, and on 3 May 1902, Pope Leo XIII granted them official approval. Today, the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart carry on their good works, inspired by the vision and legacy of Maria Del Carmen Of The Child Jesus.

Maria Del Carmen Of The Child Jesus passed away on 9 November 1899 in Antequera, Málaga, Spain, due to typhus. She was buried at the Our Lady of Victory church, located at the mother house of the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart in Antequera.

Recognizing her exemplary life and deep holiness, Maria was venerated on 7 April 1984 by Pope John Paul II. Later, on 6 May 2007, she was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in a ceremony celebrated at Antequera, Málaga, Spain, by Cardinal Saraiva Martins. The beatification miracle involved the healing of a large tumor in the liver of Sister Maria José Rodríguez in 1991.

Blessed Maria Del Carmen Of The Child Jesus continues to be an inspiration and intercessor for countless individuals. Her unwavering faith, dedication to serving the poor, and her ability to bring about conversion through prayer serve as powerful examples for all Catholics and believers.
