Biography

Blessed Maria Anna Rosa Caiani, also known as Maria Margherita, was born on 2 November 1863 in Poggio a Caiano, Florence, Italy. From a young age, Maria felt a strong call to religious life and service. However, her responsibilities to her family prevented her from pursuing this vocation until her parents passed away.

Finally relieved of family duties, Maria entered the Benedictine monastery at Pistoia on 4 October 1893. However, it became clear to her that monastic life was not her true calling, and after just a month, she left the monastery. Seeking spiritual direction, Maria embarked on a journey through her home region, where she devoted herself to teaching children in areas lacking formal schools.

Maria's dedication and passion for serving the young and the needy soon caught the attention of other like-minded women. Encouraged by this, Maria sought diocesan approval to form a formal religious community. On 7 December 1901, her request was granted, and she organized the group as the Minims of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, becoming the foundress and superior of the community.

Choosing to take the religious name Sister Maria Margherita, Maria Margherita and her community of Minims focused on teaching and caring for the education of children and the elderly sick. Their mission was characterized by their dedication to the teachings of Saint Francis and their strong devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Maria Maria Margherita made her profession as a religious sister on 17 October 1905. Her leadership and commitment to the Minims caught the attention of her fellow sisters, and on 17 October 1915, she was elected as the superior general of the congregation. She served in this role for the remaining six years of her life, leading the community with wisdom, love, and devotion.

Blessed Maria Margherita Caiani passed away on 8 August 1921 in her hometown of Poggio a Caiano, Florence, Italy, due to natural causes. Her relics were enshrined in the chapel of the mother-house of the Minim Sisters of the Sacred Heart in Poggio a Caiano, where they are venerated to this day.

Recognizing her heroic virtues and her significant impact on the spiritual and educational well-being of her community, Pope John Paul II declared her venerable on 5 June 1986. Then, on 23 April 1989, Pope John Paul II beatified her in a ceremony held at Saint Peter’s Square in Rome, Italy.

Blessed Maria Anna Rosa Caiani, known as Maria Margherita, is remembered for her profound commitment to education and caring for the sick. Her life serves as an inspiration for all those called to live a life of service to others, particularly in the context of teaching and ministering to the young and the elderly.
