Biography

Blessed Maria Adeodata Pisani, also known as Maria Adeodata and Teresa Pisani, was born on 29 December 1806 in Naples, Italy. She was the daughter of Baron Benedict Pisani Mompalao Cuzker and Vincenza Carrano. Unfortunately, her father, who was a rich, noble, Maltese man, struggled with alcoholism, which led to Maria being raised by her grandmother for most of her childhood.

In 1821, Benedict Pisani Mompalao Cuzker was involved in a revolt and was subsequently exiled to Malta. Adeodata and her mother, Vincenza, joined him in 1825. It was during this period in Malta that Adeodata's spiritual journey began to take shape. At the age of 21, she made the decision to become a Benedictine novice, entering the religious life and joining the Benedictine Order.

Upon taking her final vows, Adeodata renounced her wealth and title, embracing a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience. She dedicated herself to a life of contemplation and service as a cloistered nun. Throughout her life in the monastery, she fulfilled various roles such as seamstress, sacristan, porter, teacher, and novice mistress.

Adeodata's commitment to her religious calling was remarkable, and her sanctity shone through in her love for the poor and her practice of self-imposed austerities. She became known for her piety, humility, and spiritual fervor. Those who witnessed her spiritual devotion attested to the ecstasies she experienced, even witnessing her levitating during moments of intense prayer.

In recognition of her exemplary life, Blessed Maria Adeodata Pisani was appointed as the abbess of the Benedictine monastery from 1851 to 1853. However, due to her declining health, she was forced to conclude her service as abbess prematurely.

On 25 February 1855, Blessed Maria Adeodata Pisani passed away at the Benedictine monastery in Mdina, Malta, as a result of heart problems. Her deep devotion to God and her profound impact on the lives of those around her were widely recognized by the faithful.

In acknowledgement of her heroic virtues, Pope John Paul II venerated Blessed Maria Adeodata Pisani on 24 April 2001. Subsequently, she was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 9 May 2001. The miracle attributed to her intercession occurred on 24 November 1897 when Abbess Giuseppina Damiani of the Monastery of Saint John the Baptist in Subiaco, Italy, was miraculously healed of a stomach tumor after seeking intercession through Maria Pisani.

It is important to note that Blessed Maria Adeodata Pisani's cause for canonization faced significant delays due to insufficient funds and political difficulties between Malta and Italy. Nonetheless, her beatification stands as a testament to her extraordinary sanctity and the spiritual influence she continues to have on believers.
