Blessed Margueritemarieanne De Rocher, also known as Sister Marguerite-Marie-Anne of the Angels and Maria Anna Margherita degli Angeli de Rocher, was a devout Ursuline nun who became a martyr during the French Revolution. She is revered as one of the Martyrs of Orange.
Margueritemarieanne De Rocher was born on 20 January 1755 in Bollène, Vaucluse, France. From an early age, she displayed a deep devotion to her faith and a strong desire to serve God. Recognizing her calling, she joined the Ursuline Order and took the religious name Sister Marguerite-Marie-Anne of the Angels.
As a member of the Ursuline community, Sister Marguerite-Marie-Anne embraced a life of prayer, education, and service to others. She dedicated herself to the education of young girls, teaching them not only academic subjects but also instilling in them the values of faith and virtue. Her loving and gentle demeanor made her beloved by her students as well as her fellow sisters.
Unfortunately, during the turbulent times of the French Revolution, religious persecution became widespread. The Ursuline community, like many other religious orders, faced opposition and hostility from the anti-Catholic revolutionaries. Sister Marguerite-Marie-Anne, along with several other nuns from her community, became targets of the revolutionaries' ire.
On 9 July 1794, in Orange, Vaucluse, France, Sister Marguerite-Marie-Anne De Rocher was guillotined for her refusal to renounce her religious vows and her loyalty to her Catholic faith. Her martyrdom was a testament to her unwavering commitment to God and her religious community.
In recognition of her heroic sacrifice, Sister Marguerite-Marie-Anne De Rocher was venerated by the Catholic Church on 19 March 1925, following a decree of martyrdom by Pope Pius XI. On 10 May 1925, Pope Pius XI beatified her, declaring her Blessed Margueritemarieanne De Rocher.
Today, Blessed Margueritemarieanne De Rocher serves as a role model of faith, courage, and dedication to one's beliefs. Her life and martyrdom continue to inspire countless individuals to uphold their faith in the face of adversity.
