Biography

Blessed Marceliano Alonso Santamaría, born on 18 June 1906 in Grañón, Logroño, Spain, was a dedicated member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by St. Anthony Mary Claret. He professed his vows on 15 August 1923, dedicating his life to serving God and others.

Marceliano's deep faith and commitment to his vocation led him to pursue the priesthood. On 21 June 1931, he was ordained a priest, and throughout his ministry, he tirelessly worked to spread the message of God's love and salvation.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, the religious persecution inflicted death and suffering upon many clergy and religious. Marceliano was among the victims of this senseless violence. On 13 August 1936, he was martyred, being shot in Alboraya, Valencia, Spain, for his unwavering faith and refusal to renounce his religious commitment.

In recognition of his martyrdom and exemplary life, Pope Francis declared his martyrdom on 21 December 2016. This act of veneration confirmed Marceliano Alonso Santamaría's status as a Blessed within the Catholic Church.

During the beatification ceremony, which took place on 21 October 2017 at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, Archbishop Angelo Amato presided over the event. This sacred celebration marked a significant milestone in the Church's acknowledgment of Marceliano's heroic virtue and sacrifice.

Blessed Marceliano Alonso Santamaría is commemorated in the liturgical calendar on two separate feast days. First, on 13 August, the day of his martyrdom, and second, on 1 February, together with the other 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs who suffered martyrdom during the Spanish Civil War.

As a faithful servant of God who courageously faced persecution for his beliefs, Blessed Marceliano Alonso Santamaría stands as a shining example of unwavering faith and dedication to the Gospel. His life and martyrdom inspire countless believers to remain steadfast in their commitment to Christ, even in the face of adversity.
