Biography

Blessed María Purificación Vidal Pastor, born on September 14, 1892, in Alzira, Valencia, Spain, was a lifelong lay woman in the archdiocese of Valencia. She was baptized at the age of six days in the church of Saint Catherine. María Purificación dedicated her life to serving God and her community, leaving a lasting impact through her work as a tutor and her active involvement in Catholic Action.

María Purificación was known for her devotion to teaching and catechizing young working people. She recognized the importance of guiding the youth in their faith and helping them grow spiritually. Through her tireless efforts, she instilled in them values of compassion, love, and devotion to God.

In addition to her educational endeavors, she also devoted herself to caring for the sick. María Purificación's compassion and empathy led her to provide comfort and solace to those who were suffering. Her selfless acts of service touched countless lives and brought hope to those in desperate need.

Tragically, María Purificación's life was cut short during the Spanish Civil War. On September 22, 1936, she was martyred on the Corbera highway in Valencia, Spain. As a faithful Catholic, she refused to renounce her faith despite the threats and persecution she faced. María Purificación's unwavering commitment to her beliefs ultimately led to her martyrdom.

Recognizing her courageous witness and dedication to the Lord, Pope John Paul II bestowed upon her the title of Blessed on March 11, 2001. The Pontiff formally acknowledged her martyrdom and venerated her on December 18, 2000, with a decree. Each year, on September 22, the Catholic Church commemorates her feast day to honor her life and sacrifice.
