Biography

Blessed María López De Rivas Martínez, also known as María of Jesus, was born on August 18, 1560, in Tartanedo, Guadalajara, Spain. She came from a wealthy family but chose to renounce her worldly possessions and dedicate her life to God. Unfortunately, her father passed away when Maria was just four years old, and she was then raised by her paternal grandparents.

Maria received a well-rounded education and demonstrated a strong affinity for spirituality from a young age. At the age of 17, she joined the Carmelite Order in Toledo, Spain, and embarked on a lifelong journey as a Carmelite nun. Maria lived a remarkable 63 years within the walls of the Carmelite convent, embracing a life of prayer, penance, and service to God and her community.

Throughout her religious life, Blessed María López De Rivas Martínez experienced extraordinary mystical experiences, including the gift of the stigmata. This phenomenon, in which the wounds of Christ appeared on her body, was a testament to her deep devotion and union with Christ.

Maria's spiritual gifts did not go unnoticed within her order, and she was eventually chosen to serve as the Prioress of the Carmelite community. Her leadership qualities and commitment to the spiritual growth of her sisters inspired those around her, and she became known for her humility, wisdom, and compassion.

However, in 1600, Maria's virtuous life took an unexpected turn when she was unjustly accused of an offense by one of her sisters. Despite her innocence, she was relieved of her duties as Prioress and forced into isolation for a agonizing 20 years. Throughout this period of undeserved suffering, Maria maintained her steadfast faith and trust in God, offering her pain as a sacrifice for the salvation of souls.

Blessed María López De Rivas Martínez was a beloved friend and confidante of the renowned Saint Teresa of Avila. So great was Teresa's trust in Maria that she honored her by allowing Maria to be a test reader for her influential book, "The Interior Castle." This privilege attests to Maria's profound spiritual insight and theological acumen.

After a life of extraordinary holiness and unwavering fidelity to her calling, Blessed María López De Rivas Martínez passed away on September 13, 1640, in Toledo, Spain. Her life and virtues were recognized by the Catholic Church, and on June 22, 1972, Pope Paul VI declared her venerable, acknowledging her heroic virtues. She was later beatified on November 14, 1976, by Pope Paul VI.
