Biography

Blessed María Josefa Del Río Messa, also known as Sister María Josefa of Saint Sophia, was born on April 30, 1895, in Tarragona, Spain. She was a devoted member of the Carmelite Sisters of Charity and dedicated her life to the service of God and her fellow human beings.

Sister María Josefa lived during a tumultuous time in Spanish history, which included the Spanish Civil War. During this conflict, she remained steadfast in her dedication to her faith and her religious vocation.

On September 23, 1936, in the town of Benicalap, Valencia, Sister María Josefa was martyred for her unwavering commitment to Christ. Despite the threats and dangers faced by Catholics during this period, she refused to renounce her beliefs or abandon her religious community.

In recognition of her courageous witness to the Catholic faith, Sister María Josefa was venerated on December 20, 1999, by Pope John Paul II, who issued a decree of martyrdom. Her beatification followed on March 11, 2001, also conferred by Pope John Paul II.
