Blessed María Del Carmen Zaragoza Y Zaragoza, born on 1 June 1888 in Villajoyosa, Alicante, Spain, was a member of the Dominican Sisters of Education of the Immaculata. She led a life dedicated to her faith and the service of others, ultimately sacrificing her life during the Spanish Civil War.
María Del Carmen Zaragoza Y Zaragoza grew up in a devout Catholic family in Spain. From a young age, she felt a calling to religious life and joined the Dominican Sisters of Education of the Immaculata. This religious community was committed to providing education and spiritual guidance to young people.
Sister María Del Carmen was known for her kind and compassionate nature. She dedicated herself to her work, teaching children, and nurturing their faith. Her commitment to her vocation and her deep love for God and others were evident in everything she did.
Unfortunately, during the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution targeted members of religious communities, including the Dominican Sisters. Sister María Del Carmen Zaragoza Y Zaragoza became a victim of this persecution.
On 7 August 1936, Sister María Del Carmen was martyred in the Lledoner forest in Vallirana, Barcelona, Spain. She bravely faced persecution and violence, remaining steadfast in her faith until the end. Her courageous witness and sacrifice serve as an important reminder of the profound love and dedication that can be found in the Catholic faith.
The Vatican recognized the sanctity of Sister María Del Carmen Zaragoza Y Zaragoza's life and martyrdom. On 19 December 2005, Pope Benedict XVI issued a decree of martyrdom, thereby declaring her venerable. Then, on 28 October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified her, officially recognizing her as Blessed María Del Carmen Zaragoza Y Zaragoza.
Blessed María Del Carmen Zaragoza Y Zaragoza's feast day is celebrated on 7 August, the day of her martyrdom. Her life and example continue to inspire and encourage Catholics around the world, reminding them of the importance of faith and selfless service even in the face of adversity.
