Blessed María de los Dolores Sobrino Cabrera de Cabezas, also known as Blessed Dolores Sobrino, was a lifelong lay woman from the archdiocese of Seville, Spain. She was born on April 19, 1868, in Constantina, a town located in the province of Seville.
On December 27, 1891, Dolores married Rafael Cabezas Ruival de Flores and began her married life. Despite her commitment to her family, Dolores was deeply involved in her faith and dedicated herself to serving God and her community.
During the Spanish Civil War, a dark period marked by religious persecution, Dolores faced great challenges due to her unwavering faith. She and her husband remained steadfast in their commitment to Catholicism amidst the increasing violence and hostility towards the Church.
Tragically, it was on July 23, 1936, that Dolores Sobrino met her martyrdom. She was shot in the parish church of Constantina, where she had sought refuge in prayer during these tumultuous times. Her final act of defiance against religious persecution serves as a testament to her unshakable faith and devotion to God.
Blessed Dolores Sobrino's life and martyrdom are an inspiration to many, highlighting the strength and resilience of lay Catholics during times of persecution. Her steadfast dedication, even in the face of grave danger, reminds us of the importance of remaining faithful and steadfast in our beliefs.
On June 22, 2023, Pope Francis declared Dolores Sobrino Cabrera de Cabezas venerable, recognizing her martyrdom as an exemplary witness of faith. This recognition allows her to be venerated by the Catholic faithful, who can now seek her intercession and seek inspiration from her holy life. The process of her beatification is currently ongoing.
As a courageous laywoman and martyr, Blessed Dolores Sobrino Cabrera de Cabezas holds a special place in the hearts of the faithful. Her memory serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by many during times of religious persecution and the enduring power of faith.
