Biography

Blessed María Climent Mateu was a lay woman in the archdiocese of Valencia, Spain. She was born on 30 May 1887, in XÖtiva, Valencia, and was baptized on the day of her birth at her parish church of Saint Tecla. María received her education from the Dominican Sisters in Valencia, where she developed a love for music and embroidery. She was not only a talented singer and musician but also enjoyed creating intricate embroidery work.

María Climent Mateu actively engaged in various social and religious activities. She served as the secretary of the Catholic Women‚Äôs Trade Union, working to promote the rights and well-being of women in the workforce. Additionally, she was a dedicated member of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, an organization dedicated to serving the poor and marginalized in society.

During the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, María Climent Mateu remained devout in her faith. Sadly, on 20 August 1936, she was martyred for her unwavering commitment to Christ. Her final words were a testament to her loyalty: "Viva Christo Rey!" (Long live Christ the King!)

Recognizing her exceptional virtue and martyrdom, Blessed María Climent Mateu was venerated on 18 December 2000 by Pope John Paul II, who declared her a martyr. Later, on 11 March 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified her.

Blessed María Climent Mateu's life exemplifies her deep faith and dedication to both her community and the Catholic Church. Her unwavering devotion even in the face of persecution serves as an inspiration to believers to remain steadfast in their faith and commitment to Christ.
