Feast Day: August 23
Birth: August 6, 1872
Death: August 22, 1936
Blessed Manuela Justa Fernández Ibero, known also as Sister Serafina of Ochovi, was born on 6 August 1872 in Ochovi, Navarra, Spain. She joined the Capuchin Tertiary Sisters of the Holy Family in 1887, and ten years later, in 1896, she made her perpetual vows.
Throughout her life, Sister Serafina exhibited exceptional dedication and devotion to her religious calling. Her commitment and talents were recognized by her superiors, and in 1902, she was appointed as a general councilor to the Order. In this role, she provided guidance and leadership to the Capuchin Tertiary Sisters and contributed to the overall growth and development of the religious community.
Sister Serafina often found herself in positions of authority within the Order, serving as the superior of various houses. Her administrative skills, faithfulness to the Church, and compassionate nature endeared her to the sisters under her care. She sought to create environments where all could grow spiritually and live out the charism of their religious community.
Unfortunately, Sister Serafina's life was tragically cut short during the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War. She remained steadfast in her faith and commitment to her religious vocation, even in the face of persecution and hostility. On 22 August 1936, Sister Serafina was martyred in La Vall d‚ÄôUixó, Castellón, Spain, bearing witness to her unwavering dedication to Christ and the Church.
Recognizing her holiness and sacrifice, Pope John Paul II beatified Sister Serafina of Ochovi on 11 March 2001. Her feast day is celebrated on 23 August each year, honoring her memory and inviting others to follow her example of faithful discipleship.
Blessed Manuela Justa Fernández Ibero's life serves as an inspiration to all, urging us to remain steadfast in our faith, even in the face of adversity. Her dedication to the religious life and her ultimate sacrifice for the love of God and the Church remind us of the profound value of our own spiritual journeys. May she intercede for us and guide us towards a deeper relationship with Christ.
