Blessed Manuel Olay Colunga, born on 25 July 1911 in Noreña, Asturias, Spain, was a seminarian of the Archdiocese of Oviedo. He lived during a tumultuous period in Spanish history, marked by the onset of the Spanish Civil War. Despite the chaos and turmoil of the times, Blessed Manuel remained steadfast in his faith and commitment to his vocation.
As a young man, Manuel felt called to the priesthood and entered the seminary of the archdiocese. He dedicated himself wholeheartedly to his studies, seeking to deepen his understanding of the Catholic faith and prepare himself for the service of God's people.
However, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 brought unprecedented challenges and dangers to the Church and its clergy. Throughout the conflict, the Catholic Church became a target of persecution, with many priests and religious martyred for their faith.
Tragically, Blessed Manuel Olay Colunga fell victim to this violence. On 22 September 1937, in Villafría, Asturias, Spain, he was martyred for refusing to renounce his faith and betray his commitment to the Church. With unwavering courage and conviction, he gave his life as a witness to the Gospel and the principles of his Catholic faith.
For many years, the heroic virtues and martyrdom of Blessed Manuel were recognized and honored by the faithful. Finally, on 7 November 2018, Pope Francis decreed the recognition of his martyrdom, venerated him, and elevated him to the rank of Blessed.
Subsequently, on 9 March 2019, the beatification ceremony of Blessed Manuel Olay Colunga was held at the Cathedral of San Salvador in Oviedo, Spain. The ceremony was presided by Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu, representing Pope Francis. This beatification was a significant moment for the Church, as it publicly acknowledged and celebrated the sanctity of Blessed Manuel's life and his sacrificial death.
Blessed Manuel Olay Colunga now serves as a shining example of courage, fidelity, and self-sacrifice for the Catholic faithful, particularly in times of turmoil and persecution. His feast day is celebrated on 22 September, the anniversary of his martyrdom, as a reminder of his steadfastness and the ultimate sacrifice he made for the faith.
