Biography

Blessed Manuel Martín Sierra, also known as San Manuel Martín Sierra, was a Spanish Catholic priest and martyr who dedicated his life to serving the church and his parishioners. He was born on October 2, 1892, in Churriana de la Vega, Granada, Spain.

After his ordination in the diocese of Granada in 1915, Manuel Martín Sierra pursued further studies and obtained a doctorate in theology. He was known for his intellectual capabilities and his deep knowledge of the Catholic faith.

Manuel Martín Sierra served as a teacher and chaplain at the seminary of Granada, where he nurtured the spiritual growth of young seminarians and shared his theological expertise. His dedication to education and mentorship left a lasting impact on many aspiring priests.

Later, Manuel Martín Sierra became the parish priest of the Divine Shepherdess church in Motril, Spain. Despite living in poverty himself, he worked tirelessly to support the local poor and provided them with both spiritual and material assistance. His compassionate nature and selflessness endeared him to his parishioners, who greatly admired and respected him.

During the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, when anti-Christian forces sought to suppress religious practices, Manuel Martín Sierra fearlessly defended his faith. When the Daughters of Charity sought shelter from the persecution, he opened the doors of his church to provide them with a sanctuary.

Unfortunately, the anti-Christian forces eventually discovered Manuel Martín Sierra's courageous actions and demanded that he blaspheme to renounce his faith. However, he steadfastly refused, choosing to remain faithful to his beliefs till the very end.

On July 26, 1936, Manuel Martín Sierra was martyred. He was shot in the atrium of the Divine Shepherdess parish church in Motril, Granada, Spain. His unwavering faith and refusal to renounce his Christian values in the face of persecution made him a symbol of martyrdom.

Recognizing his sacrifice and the sanctity of his life, Pope John Paul II issued a decree of martyrdom on April 8, 1997, venerating Manuel Martín Sierra. Subsequently, on March 7, 1999, Pope John Paul II beatified him, elevating him to the status of Blessed Manuel Martín Sierra.

Blessed Manuel Martín Sierra continues to inspire Catholics around the world with his unwavering faith, selfless dedication to the poor, and his courageous sacrifice as a martyr for the Christian faith. His feast day is celebrated on July 26th each year, as a reminder of his exemplary life and devotion to God.
