Biography

Blessed Manuel Luque Ramos, also known as Manuel Luque Ramos, was a dedicated layman in the archdiocese of Sevilla, Spain. Born on 6 March 1893 in Marchena, Sevilla, he grew up in a devout Catholic family and lived with his widowed mother. Manuel was an active member of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, known for his compassion and commitment to serving the poor and marginalized.

Manuel's deep faith and devotion led him to become the sacristan for the nearby Poor Clare convent in Sevilla. He faithfully carried out his duties, ensuring the smooth celebration of Mass and assisting the sisters with their religious practices.

As the Spanish Civil War erupted on 18 July 1936, anti-Catholic sentiments became prevalent, and a mob aimed to disrupt the Mass being celebrated at the Poor Clare convent. In a courageous act of defense, Manuel stood firm against the mob, protecting the sacred celebration and preventing any harm from occurring to the sisters.

However, on the following day, 19 July 1936, Manuel was abruptly seized by the hostile group and brutally shot. Despite suffering from his wounds, he managed to survive for three more days before passing away on 22 July 1936 in the hospital in Marchena, Sevilla.

Recognized for his courage, martyrdom, and unwavering faith, Blessed Manuel Luque Ramos was venerated by the Catholic Church on 22 June 2023, when Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrdom. This official recognition acknowledges Manuel's ultimate sacrifice in defense of the Catholic faith.

Though no specific representation is mentioned in the available details, it is not uncommon for representations of saints and blesseds to be depicted in artwork, such as paintings or sculptures, often highlighting aspects of their lives or symbols associated with their patronage.

Blessed Manuel Luque Ramos is commemorated and celebrated in the Catholic Church on 22 July each year, the day of his feast. His life serves as an inspiring example of fidelity to one's faith and standing up for religious freedom.
