Blessed Manuel Legua Martí, also known as Father León María from AlaquÖs, was a devoted member of the Capuchin Tertiary Fathers and Brothers of Our Lady of Sorrows. He was born on 23 April 1875 in the town of AlaquÖs, Valencia, located in Spain. From an early age, Blessed Manuel displayed a deep sense of spirituality and a strong commitment to serving others, which eventually led him to pursue a vocation as a priest.
After completing his studies, Blessed Manuel Legua Martí was ordained as a priest and dedicated his life to ministering to the spiritual needs of the faithful. He served diligently in various parishes, earning a reputation for his compassion, humility, and selflessness. Many sought his counsel and guidance, recognizing in him a holy man driven by a profound love for God and his fellow human beings.
Unfortunately, during the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Manuel's life took a tragic turn. As the war engulfed the country, the Catholic Church and its clergy became targets of persecution by the communist and anarchist factions. In the face of this violence, Blessed Manuel remained steadfast in his faith, courageously continuing to provide spiritual support to those in need.
Tragically, on 26 September 1936, while ministering in Madrid, Blessed Manuel Legua Martí fell victim to the violence of the Spanish Civil War. He was martyred for his unwavering commitment to Christ and his Church, dying as a witness to the Gospel of love and peace. His life serves as a testament to the profound sacrifice and devotion exhibited by many during this tumultuous period in Spain's history.
Recognizing the sanctity of Blessed Manuel's life and his ultimate sacrifice, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable on 18 December 2000, signifying the Church's recognition of his heroic virtue. Subsequently, on 11 March 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified Father León María, granting him the title of "Blessed Manuel Legua Martí." This beatification not only acknowledged his martyrdom but also elevated him as an inspiring example of faithfulness and commitment to God's Kingdom.
Blessed Manuel Legua Martí's feast day is celebrated annually on 26 September, the date of his martyrdom. On this day, faithful Catholics are encouraged to reflect upon his life and draw inspiration from his unwavering dedication to the Church and his selfless service to others.
