Blessed Manuel BorrÖs Ferré, also known as Manuel BorrÖs i Ferré, was born on September 9, 1880, in La Canonja, a small town in the province of Tarragona, Spain. He demonstrated a devout and pious nature from a young age, which ultimately led him to pursue a religious vocation as a priest.
On September 19, 1903, Manuel BorrÖs Ferré was ordained a priest, dedicating himself to serving God and his community. He displayed great intellectual and spiritual capabilities, which soon caught the attention of the Church authorities.
Due to his theological knowledge and exemplary character, Father BorrÖs Ferré was appointed as a Notary of the Curia, assuming important responsibilities within the ecclesiastical courts. Additionally, he was entrusted with the role of spiritual director at the seminary of Tarragona, where he guided young men aspiring to the priesthood in their spiritual formation.
Manuel BorrÖs Ferré's faith and dedication to his ministry were recognized by the Church, and on July 2, 1934, he was consecrated as the Auxiliary Bishop of Tarragona and given the title of Titular Bishop of Bisica. His episcopal appointment further amplified his ability to influence and guide others in their spiritual journey.
However, during a tumultuous period in Spanish history marked by the Spanish Civil War, Bishop BorrÖs Ferré faced severe persecution due to his unwavering commitment to his Catholic faith. On August 12, 1936, while embodying his role as a shepherd of his flock, he was tragically martyred by execution at Coll de Lilla near Montblanc, Tarragona, Spain. Remarkably, he was killed while blessing his executioners, a testament to his unwavering faith and Christian love.
Following his martyrdom, Blessed Manuel BorrÖs Ferré's body was desecrated and burned. Nevertheless, his memory and the example he set during his earthly life were remembered and highly regarded by the faithful.
Recognizing his sacrificial death for the sake of his faith, Pope Benedict XVI officially declared him venerable on June 28, 2012, through a decree of martyrdom. Later, on October 13, 2013, Pope Francis beatified Manuel BorrÖs Ferré, acknowledging his virtuous life and heroic death as a witness to Christ's message. The beatification ceremony took place in Tarragona, Spain, where he had served as both a priest and bishop.
Blessed Manuel BorrÖs Ferré stands as a shining example of unwavering faith, selflessness, and courage in the face of persecution. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire and remind us of the ultimate sacrifice that some faithful servants are called to make for their beliefs.
