Biography

Blessed Mancius of Saint Thomas, also known as Mancius Shibata, was a Dominican friar and martyr who was born in 1600 in Higo, Japan. He is remembered for his unwavering faith and his ultimate sacrifice for the Catholic Church during a turbulent period in Japan's history.

Mancius entered religious life as a Dominican friar, dedicating himself to a life of prayer, study, and service. During this time, Japan was undergoing a period of intense persecution against Christians, with authorities actively seeking to eradicate the Catholic faith and its followers from the country. Despite these very real dangers, Mancius remained committed to his religious calling, working tirelessly to spread the teachings of the Catholic Church and offer spiritual guidance to the faithful.

In 1622, Mancius was arrested for his Christian beliefs and imprisoned in Omura, Nagasaki. Despite facing harsh treatment and torture, he refused to renounce his faith, remaining steadfast in his devotion to God and the Catholic Church. On September 12, 1622, Mancius was cruelly burned alive as a martyr for his refusal to deny Christ.
