Blessed Mancius of Saint Thomas, also known as Mancius Shibata, was a Dominican friar and martyr who was born in 1600 in Higo, Japan. He is remembered for his unwavering faith and his ultimate sacrifice for the Catholic Church during a turbulent period in Japan's history.
Mancius entered religious life as a Dominican friar, dedicating himself to a life of prayer, study, and service. During this time, Japan was undergoing a period of intense persecution against Christians, with authorities actively seeking to eradicate the Catholic faith and its followers from the country. Despite these very real dangers, Mancius remained committed to his religious calling, working tirelessly to spread the teachings of the Catholic Church and offer spiritual guidance to the faithful.
In 1622, Mancius was arrested for his Christian beliefs and imprisoned in Omura, Nagasaki. Despite facing harsh treatment and torture, he refused to renounce his faith, remaining steadfast in his devotion to God and the Catholic Church. On September 12, 1622, Mancius was cruelly burned alive as a martyr for his refusal to deny Christ.
Blessed Mancius of Saint Thomas' martyrdom is a testament to his extraordinary faith and unwavering commitment to the Catholic Church. His courageous defiance in the face of persecution serves as an inspiration to Christians around the world, reminding us of the enduring power of faith in even the most challenging and dangerous circumstances.
In recognition of his martyrdom and the example he set as a faithful servant of God, Mancius was venerated by Pope Pius IX on February 26, 1866, with a decree of martyrdom. He was later beatified by the same pope on May 7, 1867. Today, his feast day is celebrated on September 12th, a solemn occasion to honour his memory and reflect on the sacrifices made by martyrs like Mancius in defense of their faith.
