Biography

Blessed Manés De Guzmán, also known as Mamerto, Mamés, Manez, and Mannes, was born around 1170 in Caleruega, Castile, which is in modern-day Burgos, Spain. He was the son of Felix de Guzman and Blessed Juana of Aza, and he had an illustrious lineage as the older brother of Saint Dominic de Guzman, the founder of the Dominican Order.

Manés received his education from his uncle, Gonzalo de Aza, in Gumiel de Izan. In 1183, he joined the Cistercians at the San Pedro monastery in Gumiel de Izan, where he began his path of religious devotion and service. After dedicating himself to a life of contemplation and prayer, Manés' true calling emerged when he decided to join his brother, Dominic, in establishing and spreading the Dominican Order.

In 1217, Manés became one of the first 15 members of the Dominican Order, which was officially founded on 15 August of that year. He played a crucial role in assisting his brother in the early formation and growth of the order. Manés served as the Prior of the Saint-Jacques monastery in Paris, France, and he went on to establish a sister convent there.

Subsequently, he was transferred to Madrid, Spain, in 1219, where he played a vital role in establishing the presence of Dominican nuns in that city. Manés' commitment to the order extended beyond his administrative duties as he also dedicated himself to preaching fervently. Described as both quiet and contemplative, Manés possessed a fiery and determined preaching style that endeared him to many.

The highlight of Manés' life came when he had the opportunity to attend the canonization of his brother, Saint Dominic, on 13 July 1234, in Rome, Italy. Overwhelmed with pride and joy, he returned to Caleruega with plans to build a church dedicated to Saint Dominic. Tragically, he passed away before he could see his vision come to fruition, dying in 1234 within the walls of the San Pedro de Gumiel monastery in Izan, Castile.

Blessed Manés De Guzmán's immense contribution to the early spread of the Dominicans cannot be understated. His quiet and contemplative nature, combined with his passionate preaching, made him an invaluable asset in consolidating the order's foundations. His dedication to the spiritual life and relentless pursuit of spreading the Gospel left an indelible mark on the Dominican Order.

Blessed Manés De Guzmán was beatified on 2 June 1834 by Pope Gregory XVI, who confirmed his cultus. He is honored and remembered on his feast day, which is celebrated on 30 July each year. He was laid to rest at the monastery of San Pedro de Gumiel, where his memory continues to inspire and guide the faithful in their spiritual journey.
