Blessed Maisam Pho Inpèng

Biography

Blessed Maisam Pho Inpèng was a married layman who lived in the apostolic vicariate of Vientiane in modern-day Laos. He is recognized as a martyr for his unwavering faith and dedication to the Catholic Church. Although not much is known about his personal life, his remarkable commitment to his faith and his ultimate sacrifice have made him an inspiration and a beloved figure among the faithful.

Maisam Pho Inpèng was born in Sam Neua, Houaphan, Laos in 1934. Despite living in a predominantly Buddhist country, he embraced the Catholic faith fervently and dedicated himself to spreading the teachings of Christ in a challenging and hostile environment. Laos was undergoing political and social upheaval during this time, with the communist Pathet Lao regime gaining strength and actively suppressing religious activities.

Despite the risks involved, Maisam Pho Inpèng fearlessly carried out his mission as a layman in the Catholic Church. He played a vital role in supporting the local Catholic community through his involvement in catechesis and various pastoral activities. Married and with responsibilities as a family man, his commitment to his faith was unwavering, and he saw it as his duty to live out his Catholic beliefs in all aspects of his life.

Unfortunately, his devotion to the Church did not go unnoticed by the authorities. On March 7, 1970, Maisam was captured in Den Din, Vientiane, and subjected to severe persecution for his faith. Despite the threats and severe torture inflicted upon him, he steadfastly refused to renounce his Catholic beliefs, remaining resolute and faithful until his last breath. Maisam Pho Inpèng was ultimately martyred for his dedication to the Catholic faith, becoming a symbol of courage and faithfulness in the face of persecution.

In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope Francis declared Blessed Maisam Pho Inpèng venerable on June 5, 2015. His beatification followed on December 11, 2016, with a ceremony held in Vientiane, Laos, presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato. This event was a significant milestone for the Catholic community in Laos, bringing recognition to the sacrifices made by local believers and inspiring others to continue living their faith boldly.

Blessed Maisam Pho Inpèng's life serves as a testament to the strength of faith and the triumph of goodness and virtue amidst adversity. Even in the face of persecution, he remained steadfast in his dedication to God and his Church, setting an example for all believers to follow. Today, he is venerated as a martyr and holds a special place of honor within the Catholic community in Laos and beyond.
