Blessed Lukarda Of Oberweimar

Blessed

Feast Day: March 22

Biography

Blessed Lukarda of Oberweimar, also known as Lukarda of Erfurt, Lukardis, Lucardis, or Lutgarda, was a Cistercian nun at the Oberweimar abbey near Weimar, Thuringia, in modern-day Germany. She was born around 1275, most likely in Erfurt, Germany. Lukarda joined the abbey at the tender age of 12.

Despite her own ill-health, Lukarda was assigned to work in the infirmary, where she displayed remarkable care and patience towards the sick. Her devotion and compassion gained her a reputation as an outstanding caregiver, and she eventually became known as a miraculous healer. People sought her intercession, and through her prayers, many experienced miraculous healings.

Lukarda's spiritual life was deeply mystical, characterized by a profound prayer life. She developed a special devotion to the Virgin Mary, Saint John the Baptist, and the Passion of Christ. Her contemplative nature and fervent devotion allowed her to experience a vision of Jesus. In this vision, Lukarda was imprinted with the stigmata, the wounds corresponding to those of Jesus on the cross.

Blessed Lukarda was considered a model of holiness within her community and beyond. Her presence in the abbey was marked by humility and a genuine desire to serve others, especially the sick. Her unwavering faith and dedication to God inspired those around her to deepen their own spiritual lives.

On March 22, which coincided with Palm Sunday, in the year 1309, Lukarda passed away at the Oberweimar Abbey from natural causes. She was buried in the side chapel of the monastery church, where her memory was held in high regard. Unfortunately, during the Reformation, Protestant officials suppressed her feast day in the area, further obscuring her legacy for some time.

While she remains venerated for her extraordinary faith and compassionate care for the sick, Blessed Lukarda of Oberweimar has not been officially beatified by the Catholic Church at this time. However, her life continues to inspire those who seek humility, devotion, and selfless service to others in the imitation of Christ.
