Biography

Blessed Luis Vidaurrázaga González, also known as Father Luis Vidaurrázaga, was born on 13 September 1901 in Bilbao, Spain. He was a Benedictine monk belonging to the Solesmes Congregation, known for his commitment to his religious vocation as well as his passion for Gregorian chants. Father Vidaurrázaga dedicated his life to serving God and guiding others spiritually.

During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, Father Luis Vidaurrázaga went into hiding to escape persecution from anti-Catholic forces who sought to suppress the Church. However, despite his efforts to remain undetected, he was eventually betrayed and arrested.

Tragically, on the night of 31 December 1936, Father Vidaurrázaga was executed through a gunshot in La Elipa, Madrid. He became a martyr for his unwavering faith and refusal to renounce his Catholic beliefs, even in the face of persecution and imminent danger.

Blessed Luis Vidaurrázaga González is revered for his courage and dedication to his religious calling. His martyrdom is seen as a testament to his strong commitment to defending the Catholic faith during a time of great adversity.

In recognition of Father Vidaurrázaga's heroic faith and sacrifice, Pope Francis declared him "Blessed" on 29 October 2016. Today, Blessed Luis Vidaurrázaga González is venerated as a model of faith and devotion for Catholics worldwide. His unwavering commitment to the Catholic Church and his martyrdom serve as an inspiration for those facing religious persecution and adversity. His feast day is celebrated on 31 December, commemorating the day of his martyrdom.
