Biography

Blessed Luis Valls Matamales, also known as Father Ambrosio of Benaguacil, was a devout Franciscan Capuchin friar who dedicated his life to the service of God and others. He was born on May 3, 1870, in Benaguacil, Valencia, Spain, to a deeply religious family. From a young age, Luis showed a remarkable inclination towards spirituality and a desire to pursue a life of holiness.

Luis Valls Matamales joined the Capuchin Order and was professed as a friar on May 28, 1891. After several years of dedicated study and contemplation, he was ordained as a priest on December 22, 1900. It was during this time that he adopted the religious name Father Ambrosio of Benaguacil, by which he became widely known and revered.

Father Ambrosio was recognized for his excellent preaching skills, capturing the hearts and minds of those who heard him. He had a particular talent for guiding individuals in the sacrament of confession, providing spiritual direction, and offering them solace and guidance in their spiritual journeys. His sermons and counsel were characterized by a deep understanding of human frailties, coupled with a profound compassion and love for God and fellow beings.

Throughout his life, Father Ambrosio dedicated himself to prayer and acts of charity. He embraced a life of simplicity and poverty, yet his heart overflowed with generosity towards those in need. He selflessly served the poor, the marginalized, and the suffering, offering them comfort and assistance. Father Ambrosio's acts of kindness and love mirrored the teachings of Christ and exemplified the essence of his religious vocation.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, Father Ambrosio fell victim to widespread persecution against Catholics and religious figures. On August 24, 1936, in Algemesí, Valencia, he was martyred for his unwavering faith, courageously witnessing to the Gospel until the end. His martyrdom became a powerful testimony to his commitment to Christ and his unwavering loyalty to the Catholic Church.

Recognizing the holiness and sacrifice of Father Ambrosio, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable on December 20, 1999, with a decree of martyrdom. Later, on March 11, 2001, the same Pope beatified him in a solemn ceremony, acknowledging his exemplary life and martyrdom as an inspiration to all Catholics.

Blessed Luis Valls Matamales, or Father Ambrosio of Benaguacil, continues to be revered as a model of faith, a dedicated priest, an ardent preacher, a compassionate confessor, and a selfless servant of the poor. His feast day is celebrated on August 26th in honor of his martyrdom, which serves as a reminder of his extraordinary courage, unwavering faith, and selfless love for God and humanity. His life and witness leave an indelible mark on the Catholic Church, inspiring others to live lives of holiness, service, and love.
