Blessed Luis Herrero Arnillas, also known as Esteban Vicente, was a professed religious in the Brothers of the Christian Schools, commonly known as the De La Salle Brothers. He was born on 22 August 1893 in La Serna, León, Spain.
Luis Arnillas dedicated his life to the service of God and education as a member of the De La Salle Brothers. He embraced the religious life, living his vocation with great commitment and devotion. His dedication to the principles of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, the founder of the Brothers, was evident in his daily work as an educator.
However, his life took a tragic turn during the Spanish Civil War, which erupted in the late 1930s. This violent conflict deeply divided Spanish society, and religious individuals, including Luis Arnillas, were targeted because of their faith. Luis Arnillas was martyred for his Catholic faith on 30 July 1936 in Casa de Campo, Madrid, Spain.
Luis Arnillas' martyrdom, involving the ultimate sacrifice of his life, became a powerful testament to his unwavering devotion to Christ. His courage and unfailing commitment to his faith in the face of severe persecution embodied the spirit of martyrdom in the Catholic Church.
Recognizing his martyrdom, Pope Benedict XVI issued a decree on 19 December 2011 venerating Luis Arnillas as a Blessed. His beatification followed on 13 October 2013, celebrated by Pope Francis. This significant recognition by the Church acknowledges Luis Arnillas' sanctity and serves as an inspiration for Catholics worldwide.
Blessed Luis Herrero Arnillas is remembered and honored on his feast day, which falls on 30 July each year. The faithful commemorate his life, martyrdom, and the profound example he set for all Christians. Through his intercession, believers seek his guidance and assistance in their own spiritual journey.
Today, the legacy of Blessed Luis Herrero Arnillas continues to inspire and guide the faithful, particularly the De La Salle Brothers and those committed to Catholic education. His life serves as a reminder of the sacrifices that have been made for the sake of faith and the importance of living virtuous lives in serving others.
