Biography

Blessed Luis Campos Górriz, also known as Blessed Luis Campos, was born on 30 June 1905 in Valencia, Spain. From a young age, he received an education under the guidance of the Jesuits, who played a vital role in shaping his spiritual and intellectual development.

In 1921, Campos Górriz enrolled at the University of Valencia, where he pursued studies in both law and philosophy. During his time at the university, he actively engaged with Marian congregations, reflecting his deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This devotion would remain a significant aspect of his spiritual life throughout his journey.

Following his graduation, Campos Górriz began his professional career as a lawyer in 1930. Alongside his legal work, he became involved in various Catholic organizations and initiatives, recognizing the importance of integrating his faith with his professional life.

On 25 May 1933, he married Carmen Arteche Echeturia in the archdiocese of Valencia, Spain. Their union was blessed with the birth of a daughter, whom they lovingly raised in a devout Catholic home. Tragically, Campos Górriz became a widower in 1935 when Carmen passed away.

Despite the hardships he faced, Campos Górriz remained steadfast in his commitment to his faith and continued to actively contribute to the Church's mission. In 1933, he assumed the role of the General Secretary of Catholic Action in Madrid, Spain. This position allowed him to promote Catholic values and engage in various initiatives aimed at fostering a deeper understanding and practice of the faith.

However, during this time, Spain was embroiled in the civil unrest of the Spanish Civil War. Campos Górriz's unwavering dedication to his faith led to his martyrdom. On 28 November 1936, at the age of 31, he was tragically killed in Picadero de Paterna, Valencia, Spain. His deep devotion to the Virgin Mary was evident even in his final moments, as he held a rosary in his hand.

Recognizing his sacrificial death in defense of his faith, Pope John Paul II proclaimed the martyrdom of Blessed Luis Campos Górriz on 20 December 1999. His beatification followed on 11 March 2001, further acknowledging his exemplary life of holiness and his ultimate sacrifice.

Blessed Luis Campos Górriz serves as an inspiring example of unwavering faith, dedication to Catholic Action, and martyrdom. His life story stands as a testament to the power of faith in the face of adversity and the call to live out one's beliefs with courage and conviction. On 28 November each year, the Catholic Church commemorates his feast day, honoring his memory and his eternal presence in the communion of saints.
