Feast Day: July 20
Birth: July 29, 1914
Death: July 20, 1984
Blessed Luigi Novarese, also known as Father Luigi Novarese, was born on 29 July 1914 in Casale Monferrato, Alessandria, Italy. He was one of six children born into a farming family. Sadly, when Luigi was very young, his father passed away from pneumonia, leaving his mother to care for the family.
During his childhood, Luigi faced a significant challenge as he suffered from a childhood illness that resulted in one of his legs being several inches shorter than the other. As a result, he had to wear special shoes throughout his life. Despite this physical limitation, Luigi remained determined and focused on serving others, particularly the sick.
Luigi pursued a vocation to the priesthood and was ordained on 17 December 1938 in the Diocese of Frascati, Italy. He had a deep passion for serving the sick and dedicated his life to this ministry. Alongside his academic pursuits, which included obtaining degrees in theology and canon law, Luigi always found time to engage in what he considered his primary work – caring for the sick and suffering.
In 1943, Father Luigi Novarese founded the Priestly Marian League, an organization devoted to promoting devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary among priests. This league aimed to foster spiritual growth and dedication to the mission of the Church. It was a testament to Father Luigi's commitment to Marian devotion and his desire to inspire and encourage his fellow priests.
Continuing his commitment to caring for those who were suffering, Father Luigi, together with Sister Elvira Myriam Psorulla, founded the Volunteers of Suffering in 1947. This organization aimed to unite the suffering of individuals with the redemptive suffering of Christ. Father Luigi understood the transformative power of embracing one's own suffering and offering it for the good of others.
In 1950, Father Luigi Novarese established the Silent Workers of the Cross, a lay association made up of individuals who committed themselves to prayer and service for the sick. This association sought to bring comfort and hope to those who were afflicted, both physically and spiritually.
Furthering his mission of compassion and care, Father Luigi founded the Brothers and Sisters of the Sick in 1952. This religious community dedicated itself to the service of the sick and suffering. Through their work, they sought to alleviate the physical, emotional, and spiritual burdens faced by those in need.
Throughout his life, Father Luigi Novarese exhibited profound humility, love, and self-sacrifice in his service to others. His unwavering devotion and innovative initiatives in the field of healthcare ministry inspired many and brought much-needed solace to the sick and suffering.
Father Luigi Novarese passed away on 20 July 1984 in Rocca Priora, Rome, Italy, leaving behind a rich legacy of compassion and dedication to the sick. Recognizing his exceptional virtues, Pope Benedict XVI declared him venerable on 27 March 2010. Later, on 11 May 2013, Pope Francis beatified Father Luigi Novarese, recognizing him as a model of holiness and an inspiration for all. The beatification ceremony was held at the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside-the-Walls in Rome, Italy, presided over by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.
Blessed Luigi Novarese's life serves as a testament to the transformative power of selfless service, especially to those who are suffering. He remains an example for all Christians, inspiring us to embrace the call to compassion and care, and to find Christ in the midst of our own challenges and the challenges of others.
