Biography

Blessed Louis Leroy, born on 8 October 1923 in Ducey, Manche, France, was a dedicated member of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. He answered the call to priesthood and selflessly served as a missionary in Laos. With great zeal, he strived to spread the message of God's love and the teachings of the Catholic Church among the people in Xieng Khouang province.

As a missionary and priest, Blessed Louis Leroy faced numerous challenges and lived amidst the difficulties of a turbulent period in Laos' history. He fervently worked towards building a strong faith community, reconciling people, and fostering peace in a region torn by conflicts and political unrest.

Tragically, on 18 April 1961, while serving in Ban Pha, Xieng Khouang, Laos, Father Leroy made the ultimate sacrifice for his faith. He was martyred, courageously embracing martyrdom for the sake of his beliefs. His unwavering dedication to spreading the Gospel and his selfless love for the people of Laos left a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Blessed Louis Leroy's martyrdom did not go unrecognized. On 5 June 2015, Pope Francis declared his martyrdom, signifying his heroic witness to the Catholic faith. The beatification of Father Leroy took place on 11 December 2016, during a special ceremony in Vientiane, Laos. The beatification recognition was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, representing Pope Francis.
