Biography

Blessed Lorenzo of Ripafratta, also known as Lorenzo of Pisa, was born into the Italian nobility in the year around 1373, in Ripafratta, Italy. His family had a long-standing military tradition and was responsible for safeguarding the outer defenses of the city of Pisa. However, Lorenzo felt a strong calling to the religious life, and despite his family's expectations, he pursued his vocation to become a priest.

Lorenzo began his studies for the priesthood and, as a deacon, he joined the Dominican Order at the convent of Saint Catherine in Pisa in 1396. Within the Dominican community, he devoted himself to the pursuit of reform and encouraged his fellow friars to deepen their commitment to the Rule, study, and prayer life. Manifesting exceptional capabilities, he was appointed as a novice master, spiritual director, and preacher.
