Blessed Lluís Estruch Vives, also known as Eudald of Igualada, was a devoted Franciscan Capuchin friar who was born on 6 April 1918 in Igualada, Barcelona, Spain. He made his first profession on 9 September 1934, joining the order with great zeal and dedication.
During the tumultuous years of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Lluís Estruch Vives tragically became a victim of persecution due to his religious faith. Although he was not able to make his solemn profession as a result, his commitment to his religious vocation remained unwavering until his untimely death. On 1 November 1936, in the town of La Pobla de Claramunt, Barcelona, Spain, Blessed Lluís Estruch Vives was martyred by Marxists who opposed the Catholic Church.
Recognizing the heroism and sacrifice displayed by Blessed Lluís Estruch Vives, Pope Francis officially venerated him on 5 June 2015 through a decree of martyrdom. This esteemed recognition by the Holy Father signifies the acknowledgment of his martyrdom and sanctity within the Catholic Church.
Moreover, on 21 November 2015, Pope Francis elevated Blessed Lluís Estruch Vives to the status of beatified during a momentous ceremony held at the cathedral of Santa Creu i Santa EulÖlia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, who conducted the rites of beatification to officially declare the blessed friar's entry to the ranks of the Beatified of the Church.
