Biography

Blessed Licinius, also known as Lesé, Lezens, Léziers, Licerius, or Licinio, was a soldier martyr born in Spain in an unspecified date during the 9th century. Little is known about his early life and background.

Licinius bravely served as a soldier, and his steadfast faith in the Catholic Church was unwavering. It is said that Licinius was stationed in the region of Mas d’Auvignon, France, where he met his untimely demise as a result of his unwavering devotion to his faith.

While the exact circumstances surrounding his martyrdom are not recorded, it is believed that Licinius faced persecution for his Christian beliefs. His refusal to renounce his faith even in the face of danger propelled him into martyrdom.

Following his death, Licinius' relics, consisting of his remains, were venerated and enshrined in a reliquary and a beautiful white marble tomb placed in the Church of Saint Martin in Lectoure, France. This sacred tomb and reliquary hold an enduring testament to his sacrifice and serve as a focal point of reverence for those who honor his memory.

Although there is no specific representation associated with Blessed Licinius, his legacy endures through the continued veneration and devotion of the faithful. Many individuals are drawn to his story of courage, strength, and unwavering commitment to his faith.

The cultus, or religious veneration, of Blessed Licinius began to gain recognition as early as 1517, with records indicating an established devotion to his martyrdom. Furthermore, in the 18th century, the diocesan level confirmed the cultus, affirming the legitimacy of the veneration bestowed upon him.

In 1841, Archbishop Nicolas-Augustin de la Croix d’Azolette of Auch, France officially confirmed the cultus of Blessed Licinius, further solidifying his status as a blessed in the Catholic Church.

Blessed Licinius is honored and remembered with great reverence on his feast day, which is observed on September 2nd in the Diocese of Auch, France. On this day, countless faithful gather at the Church of Saint Martin in Lectoure to pay homage to the soldier martyr and seek his intercession.
