Biography

Blessed Leovigildo Ávalos González, also known as Father Leovigildo Ávalos González, was a Catholic priest hailing from the diocese of Córdoba, Spain. He faithfully served the Posadas community, dedicating his life to the spiritual guidance and upliftment of his parishioners.

Leovigildo Ávalos González was born on July 6, 1876, in the town of Posadas, Córdoba, Spain. From a young age, he felt a deep calling to the priesthood and embarked on a journey of religious formation. After completing his studies and theological training, Leovigildo was ordained as a priest, entering the sacred ministry and committing himself to spreading the love and teachings of Jesus Christ.

During the tumultuous time of the Spanish Civil War, Father Leovigildo Ávalos González remained steadfast in his faith and dedication to his community. Unfortunately, this commitment resulted in his cruel martyrdom on July 23, 1936, in Posadas, Córdoba. He embraced his fate with courage, refusing to renounce his faith even in the face of adversity.

Father Leovigildo's virtuous life and unwavering faith have been recognized by the Catholic Church. On November 23, 2020, Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrdom, venerating him as a Blessed. This recognition was further solidified on October 16, 2021, when Pope Francis himself beatified him during a special ceremony held at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain. The beatification recognition was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, adding to the solemnity of the occasion.
