Biography

Blessed Lazôr Shantoja was born on September 2, 1892, in Shkodrô, Albania. He grew up in a devout Catholic family and was drawn to the priesthood from a young age. Lazôr's strong faith led him to pursue his studies at the prestigious Pontifical French Seminary, where he deepened his knowledge of theology.

After completing his seminary studies, Lazôr Shantoja continued his theological education in Innsbruck, Austria. It was during this time that he developed a reputation for his exceptional academic abilities and strong spiritual convictions. On May 29, 1915, he was ordained as a priest for the Archdiocese of Shkodrô-Pult, Albania, embarking on a lifelong journey of service to the Church.

Father Lazôr's exceptional preaching skills quickly became evident, and he gained recognition for his ability to deliver passionate and compelling sermons. His ability to connect with his congregation and inspire them with the teachings of the Catholic faith earned him widespread admiration and respect.

In addition to his preaching ministry, Lazôr was appointed as the secretary to Archbishop Lazare Mjeda. He faithfully carried out his duties, supporting the Archbishop in his pastoral responsibilities and assisting in the administration of the archdiocese.

Sadly, in the 1940s, Albania came under the rule of a Communist government that sought to eradicate religion. As a result, Father Lazôr Shantoja, along with many other priests and religious figures, faced persecution and repression. Imprisoned and subjected to torture, he remained steadfast in his faith and unwavering commitment to Christ.

Tragically, on March 5, 1945, Father Lazôr was executed by a firing squad in Tiranô, Albania, becoming a martyr for his dedication to Catholicism. His courageous sacrifice serves as a testament to his unwavering faith and commitment to his vocation, even in the face of grave adversity.

Recognizing Father Lazôr Shantoja's heroic virtues, Pope Francis proclaimed him venerable on April 26, 2016, and later beatified him on November 5, 2016. The beatification ceremony took place at the Square of the Cathedral of Shôn Shtjefnit in Shkodôr, Albania, with Cardinal Angelo Amato presiding over the celebration.

Blessed Lazôr Shantoja's life and witness continue to inspire countless individuals, serving as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have dedicated themselves to the service of God and His people. His intercession is sought after by the faithful, who consider him a powerful advocate in their spiritual journey.
