Biography

Blessed Laurentí Basil Matas, also known as Father Anselm de Olot, was a devout Franciscan Capuchin who dedicated his life to serving God and his fellow human beings. He made his profession on 20 October 1907, embracing the religious life within the Capuchin Order. His commitment and deep spirituality led him to be ordained as a priest on 13 June 1908.

Born on 28 December 1878 in Olot, Girona, Spain, Laurentí Basil Matas grew up in a region marked by deep Catholic traditions. From an early age, he felt a calling to the priesthood and entered the Capuchin seminary to pursue his vocation. Matas's ardent love for God and his compassionate nature made him a beloved figure among his peers and the community.

Throughout his ministry, Father Anselm de Olot dedicated himself to the proclamation of the Gospel and the care of souls. He tirelessly sought to bring people closer to God through his sermons, spiritual guidance, and the administration of the sacraments. Many individuals found solace and strength in his compassionate presence, finding in him a spiritual father who embodied the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, Father Anselm de Olot fell victim to the violence and persecution unleashed by Marxist forces. On 15 August 1936, he was brutally murdered in Barcelona, Spain. His death, borne out of hatred for his faith and his commitment to God, marked him as a martyr of the Church.

Recognizing the sanctity of Father Anselm de Olot's life and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his faith, Pope Francis decreed his veneration on 5 June 2015. This important step towards his beatification was followed by the official declaration of his beatification on 21 November 2015. The beatification ceremony took place at the cathedral of Santa Creu i Santa EulÖlia in Barcelona, Spain and was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.

Blessed Laurentí Basil Matas stands as an inspiring example of faith, courage, and dedication to Christ. His life and martyrdom serve as powerful reminders of the persecution faced by many during times of religious strife. His memory continues to be honored on 15 August, his feast day, as the faithful celebrate the life and sacrifice of this holy Franciscan Capuchin who gave his life for the sake of the Gospel.
