Feast Day: July 12
Blessed Lambert of Cîteaux, also known as Lambert of Morimond, was an eminent eleventh-century Cistercian monk and abbot who dedicated his life to the service of God and the growth of the Cistercian order. Though limited information is available about his early life, it is known that he was born in an unspecified date and hailed from an unknown place.
His journey within the Cistercian order began when he entered Morimond Abbey, located in Parnoy-en-Bassigny, France. Lambert's commitment to the monastic life and his exceptional qualities quickly caught the attention of his superiors, leading to his appointment as the abbot of Clairfontaine Abbey in Belgium. His tenure as abbot there was marked by his zeal for reform and spiritual growth, guiding the monks under his care into a deeper dedication to the religious life.
Due to his exemplary leadership skills, Lambert was appointed as the abbot of Morimond Abbey, the same abbey where he had begun his religious journey. During his time as abbot, he implemented further reforms and encouraged a strict observance of the Cistercian Rule. He dedicated himself to fostering a spirit of prayer and contemplation among the monks, cultivating an atmosphere of spiritual growth within the abbey.
Recognizing his talents, the Cistercian Order entrusted Lambert with an even greater responsibility. In 1155, he was appointed as the abbot of the prestigious C√Æteaux Abbey in Saint-Nicolas-lès-C√Æteaux, France, which held great significance as the motherhouse of the Cistercian Order. Lambert's leadership brought renewed vitality to the abbey, guiding it through a period of expansion and influence.
However, after six years of dedicated service, Lambert felt a calling to retire from leadership and embrace a more contemplative life. In 1161, he relinquished his position as abbot and returned to Morimond Abbey, where he spent the remainder of his life as a prayerful monk, devoting himself to a life of intimate communion with God.
Blessed Lambert of Cîteaux passed away in 1163 at Morimond Abbey, having led a life of remarkable holiness and dedication to God. Though not officially recognized or venerated as a saint, his exemplary virtues and contributions to the Cistercian order have earned him the title of "Blessed." His feast day is celebrated on July 12th by the Cistercian community, which continues to be inspired by his unwavering faith and commitment to the Rule of St. Benedict.
Please note that the information regarding his representation remains unknown.
