Biography

Blessed Kjeld of Viborg, also known as Ketil, Ketille, or Kield, was born to a humble peasant farming family. Little is known about his early life, but his profound faith and desire to serve the Church led him to become an evangelizing priest.

Kjeld joined the Augustinian Order and became a canon regular. He quickly rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the dean of the cathedral in Viborg, Denmark. As dean, he played a pivotal role in shaping the spiritual life of the local community and became widely known for his teachings and impassioned preaching.

Blessed Kjeld was renowned as a miracle worker, with numerous stories circulating about the healings and divine interventions that occurred through his intercession. Many sought his counsel and blessings, believing him to possess a deep connection to God. These miracles further solidified his reputation as a holy man and led to his eventual beatification.

On July 11th, Blessed Kjeld is honored on his feast day, a day set aside to commemorate his virtuous life and extraordinary contributions to the Church. Unfortunately, little is known about his actual birth date, as historical records from that period are scarce.

Tragically, the cathedral of Viborg suffered a devastating fire on June 27th, 1726, resulting in the total destruction of the building and the loss of precious relics, including those of Blessed Kjeld. Blessed Kjeld of Viborg was officially beatified in 1189 by Bishop Absalon and Pope Clement III, who confirmed his cultus.
