Biography

Blessed Julio Esteve Flors, also known as Father Buenaventura of Puzol, was born on 9 October 1897 in Puzol, Valencia, Spain. He was one of nine children born to Vicente Esteve and Donna Josefa Flors. Julio was baptized just one day after his birth, displaying the significance of his Catholic faith from an early age.

On 15 September 1913, Julio joined the Capuchins and took the name Buenaventura. He dedicated himself to a life of religious service and made his final profession on 18 September 1918. Recognizing his potential, Julio furthered his studies at the renowned Gregorian University, where he honed his knowledge of philosophy and canon law.

After completing his education, Father Buenaventura became a prominent figure at the Orihuela theology institute, where he taught philosophy and canon law. He demonstrated his exceptional abilities as a preacher, lecturer, and spiritual director, earning recognition for his eloquence and spiritual insights.

Tragically, Blessed Julio Esteve Flors was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. On 25 September 1936, he met his death in Gilet, Valencia, Spain, and was buried in a mass grave in the cemetery there. However, his remains were re-interred in his hometown of Puzol, Spain, alongside other martyrs.

Blessed Julio Esteve Flors was acknowledged for his courage and unwavering faith in the face of persecution. Pope John Paul II, recognizing his martyrdom and exemplary virtue, venerated him on 20 December 1999 with a decree of martyrdom. Later, on 11 March 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified him, confirming the significance of his sanctity within the Catholic faith.
