Biography

Blessed Julio Aramendía Urquía, also known as Father Julio Aramendía Urquía, was born on 5 December 1900 in Ovanos, Navarra, Spain. He was a devoted Catholic and became a member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by Saint Anthony Mary Claret.

Julio Aramendía Urquía professed his vows on 15 August 1917, committing himself to a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience as a religious brother. His dedication and piety led him to discern a call to the priesthood, and he was ordained on 19 September 1925. As a priest, he tirelessly served the faithful, preaching the Gospel and administering the sacraments.

Tragically, Father Julio Aramendía Urquía's life was cut short during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War. On 17 August 1936, he was martyred for his religious beliefs and devotion to his ministry. He was shot in Vic, Barcelona, Spain, as part of the wave of violence against the Church during that time.

The heroic faith and courage displayed by Father Julio Aramendía Urquía, along with many other Claretians who also suffered martyrdom, were recognized by the Catholic Church. On 21 December 2016, Pope Francis declared him venerable, acknowledging his martyrdom through a decree. Later, on 21 October 2017, in a beatification ceremony held at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, Father Julio Aramendía Urquía was honored and officially beatified by Pope Francis. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato.

Blessed Julio Aramendía Urquía is now remembered and venerated as one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs, who sacrificed their lives for their faith. He is particularly honored on his feast day, which is celebrated on 17 August. Additionally, he is remembered on 1 February, along with the other Spanish Claretian Martyrs.

The life and martyrdom of Blessed Julio Aramendía Urquía serve as an inspiration to all Catholics, reminding them of the profound faith and strength of character that can be found in those who dedicate their lives to God and His Church. His example continues to encourage believers to steadfastly live out their faith, even in the face of adversity.
