Biography

Blessed Juan Silverio Pérez Ruano, also known as Crispín of Cuevas de San Marcos, was a Franciscan Capuchin monk who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 27 December 1875 in Cuevas de San Marcos, a small town in the province of Málaga, Spain.

As a devout and dedicated Catholic, Juan Silverio Pérez Ruano felt a calling to enter religious life and joined the Franciscan Capuchin order. He took the religious name of Crispín and dedicated himself to a life of prayer, contemplation, and service to others. His commitment to his vows and love for God made him a beloved figure among his fellow monks and the community.

However, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), religious persecution intensified, and Crispín, along with many other Catholic clergy and devout individuals, became targets of violence. Despite the dangers, Crispín remained steadfast in his faith and continued to minister to the spiritual needs of the people, providing solace and support in difficult times.

On 6 August 1936, in the city of Antequera, Málaga, Crispín was caught by anti-Catholic forces and martyred for his refusal to renounce his religious beliefs. His unwavering faith and dedication to God, even in the face of persecution, became a symbol of inspiration for many during a dark period in Spain's history.

Recognizing his sacrifice and martyrdom, Pope Francis declared Crispín of Cuevas de San Marcos venerable on 27 March 2013. This official recognition was followed by Crispín's beatification on 13 October 2013, a solemn ceremony where he was declared Blessed by the Pope.

Blessed Juan Silverio Pérez Ruano, or Crispín of Cuevas de San Marcos, remains an example of unwavering faith and courage in the face of adversity. His life and martyrdom serve as a reminder of the enduring power of the Catholic faith and the sacrifices made by individuals who steadfastly follow their beliefs. His feast day is celebrated on 6 August each year, commemorating the day of his martyrdom.
