Biography

Blessed Juan Sánchez Molina was born on 20 November 1882 in Rioja, Almeria, Spain. He displayed a strong devotion to the Catholic faith from an early age and pursued his studies at the San Indalecio de Almería seminary.

Juan's commitment to his faith led him to be ordained a priest in the diocese of Almería on 4 June 1909. He devoted himself wholeheartedly to his pastoral work, serving as a parish priest for over 25 years. Known for his compassion and dedication, he tirelessly ministered to his congregation, providing spiritual guidance and serving as a source of comfort and support.

In addition to his work in the parish, Juan also served as the chaplain of the Little Sisters of the Poor, who cared for the elderly and impoverished, and the Provincial Prison of Almería in 1935. He saw these roles as opportunities to extend the love and mercy of God to those most in need, offering solace and hope to the sick, prisoners, and the marginalized.

However, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Juan's faith and commitment to his vocation would be put to the ultimate test. As political tensions escalated, he found himself imprisoned for his unwavering dedication to the Catholic Church. Despite the oppressive conditions, Blessed Juan Sánchez Molina did not waver in his faith and continued to minister to his fellow prisoners, providing them with spiritual strength and comfort.

Tragically, on 27 August 1936, Blessed Juan was martyred. He was aboard the battleship Jaime I, which was anchored in the harbor in Almería at the time. His faith and courage in the face of persecution earned him the title of martyr, as he sacrificed his life for his religious beliefs.

Recognizing the sanctity and sacrifice of Blessed Juan Sánchez Molina, Pope Francis declared him venerable on 14 June 2016. On 25 March 2017, Pope Francis further celebrated his beatification, a significant step towards his ultimate canonization as a saint. The beatification ceremony took place in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce, Almería, Spain, and was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.
