Blessed Juan Pedro Del Cotillo Fernández, born on 1 May 1914 in Siero de la Reina, León, Spain, was a priest and a member of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. He is also known as one of the Oblate Martyrs of the Spanish Civil War.
Juan Pedro Del Cotillo Fernández dedicated his life to the service of God and the Catholic Church. He joined the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, a religious congregation founded by Saint Eugène de Mazenod, known for their missionary work and devotion to the Virgin Mary.
During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, which lasted from 1936 to 1939, religious persecution was rampant, and many Catholics, including priests and religious, were targeted for their faith. Blessed Juan Pedro Del Cotillo Fernández courageously continued his priestly ministry despite the danger, providing spiritual guidance and support to those in need.
Unfortunately, the details surrounding his death remain unknown. However, his martyrdom is recognized for the ultimate sacrifice he made in defense of his faith. Pope Benedict XVI, acknowledging his martyrdom, proclaimed him as venerable on 2 April 2011 through a decree. Later, on 17 December 2011, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, officially declaring him as "Blessed Juan Pedro Del Cotillo Fernández."
As one of the Oblate Martyrs of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Juan Pedro Del Cotillo Fernández is commemorated on two feast days. His first feast day is on 24 July, while the second is on 28 November, along with other Oblate Martyrs of the Spanish Civil War.
Although specific details about his life and the circumstances of his martyrdom may be scarce, we honor the memory of Blessed Juan Pedro Del Cotillo Fernández for his unwavering commitment to his priesthood and his love for God, even in the face of great adversity. His martyrdom stands as a testament to the courage and faith of the Oblates and all those who suffered during the Spanish Civil War.
