Biography

Blessed Juan Pérez Rodrigo, also known as Brother Nicolás Adriano, was a devout member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and a martyr of the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 27 January 1914 in Retascón, Zaragoza, Spain.

From a young age, Juan Pérez Rodrigo displayed remarkable piety and devotion to God. He felt a strong calling to serve others and dedicated his life to the Christian faith. Joining the Brothers of the Christian Schools, also known as the De La Salle Brothers, he embraced a life of teaching and mentoring young students.

However, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, which took place from 1936 to 1939, religious persecution was rampant. The war saw a wave of violence and hostility towards Catholic institutions and individuals who remained faithful to their beliefs. Tragically, Brother Juan Pérez Rodrigo became a victim of this persecution.

On 19 September 1936, in the city of Tarragona, Spain, Brother Juan Pérez Rodrigo was martyred, giving his life for the sake of his faith. He heroically bore witness to his love for Christ till the very end, refusing to renounce his religious vows or abandon his Christian principles. His unwavering faith and devotion in the face of immense adversity serve as an inspiration to all.

Brother Juan Pérez Rodrigo's martyrdom did not go unnoticed. Recognizing his sacrifice, Pope Benedict XVI officially declared him venerable on 28 June 2012, by issuing a decree of martyrdom. Venerable Juan Pérez Rodrigo was ultimately beatified on 13 October 2013, by Pope Francis. The beatification ceremony took place in Tarragona, Spain, where his life was honored, and his example celebrated.
