Biography

Blessed Juan Elías Medina was born on 16 November 1902 in Castro del Río, Córdoba, Spain. From a young age, he exhibited a deep devotion to the Catholic faith and felt called to serve God as a priest.

Following his vocation, he was ordained as a priest on 1 July 1926, and he began serving as a parish priest in the community of Castro del Río, located within the Diocese of Córdoba, Spain. Known for his compassion, humility, and dedication to his flock, Blessed Juan Elías Medina quickly gained the admiration and respect of the people he served.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, which erupted in 1936, anti-Catholic forces targeted priests and religious figures. On 22 July 1936, Blessed Juan Elías Medina was unjustly imprisoned alongside other Christians. Despite the harsh conditions and uncertainty of his circumstances, he remained steadfast in his faith and used his time in prison to support the spiritual lives of his fellow prisoners.

Even while enduring physical and emotional suffering, Blessed Juan Elías Medina continued to show great compassion and forgiveness. Just before his execution on the morning of 25 September 1936, at the gates of the cemetery in Castro del Río, he forgave his executioners, demonstrating the depth of his commitment to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Blessed Juan Elías Medina's unwavering faith and selfless actions led to his recognition as a martyr. Pope Francis declared him venerable on 23 November 2020, acknowledging the heroic nature of his life and death. Subsequently, on 16 October 2021, Pope Francis presided over his beatification ceremony at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain. The beatification event was a celebration of his courageous witness to the Gospel, and it was attended by numerous faithful, including Cardinal Marcello Semeraro.

Today, Blessed Juan Elías Medina is remembered and venerated as a model of Christian virtue and dedication to God. His life serves as an inspiration to all those facing adversity and persecution. We honor him on his feast day, 25 September, and seek his intercession for the strength to forgive, show love, and remain steadfast in our faith, as he did in his own life.
