Biography

Blessed Juan De Segalars, also known as Juan De Sagradelos, was born in Barcelona, Spain. Little is known about his early life, but it is believed that he joined the Mercedarians, a Catholic religious order dedicated to the rescue and redemption of Christians who were captured and enslaved by Muslims.

Juan De Segalars showed great dedication to his vocation and quickly rose within the ranks of the Mercedarians. He became the Prior of his house, leading his fellow friars in their mission of mercy and redemption. In 1439, he was appointed as the General Procurator of the Mercedarians, responsible for representing the order's interests and coordinating its activities.

In the same year, Juan De Segalars had the honor of attending the Council of Basel, a significant ecumenical council in the Catholic Church. The council aimed to address issues within the Church and promote unity among Christian nations. His presence at the council demonstrates his intellectual capabilities and commitment to the Church's teachings.

Throughout his life, Juan De Segalars sought wisdom and guidance from the pope. He made several visits to the Vatican, consulting with the Pope on matters concerning the Mercedarians and the welfare of Christian captives. His dedication to the cause of freeing enslaved Christians led him to embark on a perilous journey to Tunis, a city in present-day Tunisia, North Africa, in 1447. His aim was to ransom Christians held captive by Muslims. Although he survived the journey, the treasure he was carrying was lost, and he was unable to secure the release of the enslaved Christians. Nevertheless, his selfless act demonstrated his unwavering commitment to alleviating the suffering of others.

Blessed Juan De Segalars passed away on 24 October 1466 in Barcelona, Spain, at the age of 68. He died of natural causes, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and dedication to the service of others. He was laid to rest near the main altar of the church in the Mercedarian convent in Barcelona, a fitting final resting place for a man of deep faith.

While Blessed Juan De Segalars has not yet been officially recognized as a saint, his life and works serve as an inspiration for believers. His devotion to the Mercedarian Order, his tireless efforts to ransom enslaved Christians, and his willingness to seek guidance from Church leaders exemplify the virtues of selflessness, courage, and faith. May his memory continue to inspire all those who strive to follow God's call to love and serve others.
